The Porter International University Philosophy

Porter International University provides a unique learning experience based on Accelerated Learning, Experiential Based Learning, and Performance Based Assessment. Most classes have no exams or tests. Instead students analyze, synthesize, and apply content information to practical experience. Some classes have traditional objectively answered exams available as an alternative learning and assessment style.

Education is critical to the full actualization of the individual person and the success of the community. Porter International University provides novel and alternative approaches to learning and assessment to meet the needs and requirements of a 21st century education. Merging new concepts with original thinking and practical skills our curriculum creates innovative and dynamic learning capacity, competence, and confidence to meet future challenges.

Porter International University’s curriculum is based on the educational theories of John Porter, Ph.D., M.Ed. Dr. Porter has over 40 years of educational experience and has spoken with more than 40,000 educators about how teachers teach and assess and how students learn and are assessed.

What Dr. Porter found was that most students are taught and assessed in a narrow range of learning styles. From this he developed an education process that benefits learning and assessment of a wide range of students, especially those who are capable but have struggled through traditional educational systems.

Based on three strategies: Accelerated Learning, Experiential Based Learning, and Performance Based Assessment.

Accelerated learning is a methodology and approach to teaching and to learning which allows students to:

  • Take in more information quickly with better understanding of practical application
  • Quickly sort through large amounts of material to identify what is really important and useful
  • Analyze and evaluate problems quickly reduce the required hours and hours of study and homework

Rather than giving students a set of facts to memorize and assess just the proof of memorization, our philosophy is to give students a set of concepts then let them try out their new information and opportunities in real life settings, with observational intent, and then assess and report on their findings and process. Experiential based learning is the key component in the process of self-discovery and enlightenment. (Traditional learning and assessment styles are also available to students.)

During the course of education and learning students learn new knowledge, acquire skills, develop work habits, etc. Traditional education measures what you know, or in many cases, what you can remember on the day of the class test.

Performance-based assessments represent a set of strategies for the application of knowledge, skills, and work habits through the performance of tasks in real-life that are meaningful and engaging to students. Performance Based Assessment focuses on how well you can use what you know. Application is the critical skill. You can always use the internet to look up what you do not know.
